Uganda Orphans: Understanding the Problem

Uganda is a small country in East Africa known for its natural beauty and cultural heritage. Like many Sub-Saharan countries, Uganda struggles with poverty, and faces a distressing challenge – a growing population of orphaned children living on the streets.

This problem can be attributed to a combination of complex factors. Poverty remains a significant driver, with families unable to afford basic needs or provide a stable environment for their children. Additionally, the devastating impact of HIV/AIDS has left many children orphaned and without proper support structures.

Tragically, many of these vulnerable children end up on the streets, where they suffer from lack of basic necessities, education, and healthcare. They become easy targets for exploitation, abuse, and trafficking, perpetuating a cycle of suffering.

The absence of a nurturing environment deprives them of their childhood, causing a negative impact on their physical, emotional, and psychological development. Without intervention, these children face a bleak future, trapped in a cycle of poverty and despair.

Orphans Rescuing other Orphans

In the heart of Uganda, 3 teenage friends experienced firsthand the difficulties faced by many orphaned children. Growing up as orphans, their childhood was one of resilience and determination, breaking down countless barriers that often deny orphaned children a fair chance at well-being and a hopeful future.

As they faced their own challenges, they realized the harsh realities many children in Uganda face on a daily basis. The all-too-common images of children in desperate conditions on the streets touched their hearts deeply. This, coupled with their personal experience, ignited a powerful desire within them to make a difference.

All 3 felt the same concern and had the same vision, having experienced the struggle of growing up as orphans in Uganda; their names are Nakalembe Zamzam, Kiragga Derrick, and Kigozi Angel. United by their shared experiences and their dream of wanting to help the children suffering around them, they came together as a formidable team. Determined to turn their empathy into action, they began exploring ways to bring lasting, positive change to as many young lives as possible.

The Birth of God’s Support Orphanage Ministry

In 2014, the solution to our heartfelt ambition took form as God’s Support Orphanage Ministry. Our mission is to be a beacon of hope for orphaned children providing food, shelter, and medical care. Recognizing the importance of holistic development, we also included children’s Bibles, educational assistance and adoption opportunities. Najjuma Halimah, a single mother, joined our team as a mummy cook at the orphanage

By 2016, our vision had become more crystallized, and our efforts became more structured. This crucial year saw us take on more significant preparations, from raising capital and securing our location to spreading the word about our mission. Since 2014, we have been advocating for needy children from Mityana town and its neighboring districts.

Our orphanage, located on Station Road near Delta Petrol Station in Mityana municipality, stands as a testament to our journey and our purpose, rooted in faith and community. As a certified nonprofit and charity organization recognized by Mityana District Government, we operate within the rural areas of the Mityana municipality.

Today, we are proud to say that God’s Support Orphanage Ministry is home to one hundred wonderful children, all of whom are orphans. We also extend our reach to the wider community, uplifting spirits through our community outreach programs.
